Three Anti-Aging Tactics for Your Forties

Your forties are an inflection point. If you’ve reached forty and haven’t begun taking care of your skin, now is the time to take it seriously. That’s because this is the point in the aging process where a combination of rejuvenation and prevention is the ultimate prescription for better and younger-looking skin. If beautiful skin has eluded you so far, just a little bit of knowledge and the right ingredients can give you skin that looks better than it did ten years ago. This week, we’re going to look at three tactics, specifically for skin in your forties, to transform your skin into the best it's ever looked.

Tactic #1: Use Three Basic Products to Get Your Skin Back on Track

According to Dr. Schultz, “there are three essential skincare products that everybody should use every day: a sunscreen, an exfoliant, and an antioxidant.” Using a sunscreen will protect against discoloration, wrinkles and other signs of skin aging due to sun exposure. An exfoliant is essential for brightening and revitalizing your skin, as we’ll discuss more in depth below. And an antioxidant is the key to fighting free radicals and rejuvenating your skin. All three products work together to create a trifecta of effective and powerful skin care. No matter what your age, these are the three must-have products to keep your skin looking young and healthy.

Tactic #2: Exfoliate Every Day

Exfoliation is a key part of your regimen, but it’s even more important in your forties. As a teenager, your skin is smooth and radiant because the normal layer of surface dead cells is even and flat, causing it to reflect light. But by your forties, because of sun damage and age, it becomes uneven with lots of mounds of dead cells creating a stucco-like surface. Dr. Schultz explains, “That scatters light instead of reflecting it evenly, causing your skin to appear dull and matte. Also, decades of incomplete sun protection have allowed the sun to damage your pigment cells causing them to make too much brown color causing age spots and blotches. Exfoliation removes the abnormal mounds of dead cells and the dead cells that hold onto the extra brown pigment.” As you get older, those mounds of cells build up more and more. So in your forties, daily exfoliation is essential to restore luster, brightness and reduce the unwanted browns, giving you the younger-looking skin you crave.

Tactic #3: Visit Your Dermatologist

In addition to dull skin and discoloration, by your forties, you also start to develop lines, wrinkles and other contours that come from loss of collagen and elastic tissue. That loss comes from sun exposure (again, why sunscreen is so important), tobacco habits, or from repeated facial expressions. But this loss can be treated with fillers and lasers and your dermatologist’s office. Fillers like collagen, hyaluronic acid, lactic acid, and others, are painlessly injected into your skin to fill out lines by restoring the lost volume and laxity from broken collagen and elastic fibers. Dr. Schultz says, “The improvement from most fillers lasts months, with retreatment needed about twice a year.” Lasers and other medical devices are used to both tighten loose, sagging skin and also to cause your skin to make new collagen internally, replacing your lost and broken collagen. In this way, your lines and wrinkles are filled out with your own collagen instead of fillers.

No matter how you go about achieving younger-looking skin, know that it is achievable. Taking care of your skin at the basic level will set you up to both refresh the brightness and smoothness you thought you lost and prevent deeper wrinkles and lines from developing. And when you hit your forties and you’re ready for the next level of skin care, these two tactics will do the rest.
