How This Health and Fitness Guru Gets Her Glow Without Getting Burned

Aly Teich, founder of The Sweat Life, doesn’t sweat the small stuff. In fact, she is uber passionate about the biggest, most important things: health, wellness, and taking care of her skin. Even though she runs around all day long (often outside on one of her epic training runs), she knows that getting her glow doesn’t mean she has to sacrifice the health of her skin. So we sat down with Aly to get her tips on how to spend time in the sun and get the (healthy) glow to prove it.

Why is skin care and skin health so important to you?

Skin is the largest organ on or in our body. To me, it’s always seemed backwards that I would put so much time and effort into keeping the rest of my body healthy while ignoring one of the most important portals to my health (both inside and out) — my skin. However, I have ALWAYS been a sun baby. It wasn’t until I realized that my mother had a melanoma that might have been linked to the ovarian cancer that took her life that I finally took my sun habits as seriously as I needed to! Additionally, as I get, um, older, and see the physical ramifications of the more unhealthy habits of my younger years (and, well, shall we say, the “power” of gravity), I am reminded every time I look in the mirror that this organ needs care. Real care.

What is your favorite part about spending the summer outside?

Well, I’d still have to say the sun on my skin!! Haha! I also just love being warm. Everything is just easier and more relaxed in warm weather. You can simply walk out of the house in shorts, a tank, and flip flops without worrying about bundling up in your winter layers (and then dragging them around all day) or fumbling for hangers, hooks, and free backs of chairs to store them! I love that everything is green and lush, and that the sun stays out through the evening – making you want to soak up every last bit of the day.

How do you keep your skin protected in the summer months?

SPF SPF SPF SPF! Did I mention SPF? Since I am training for the NYC marathon, even if I did give up on my old bask-by-the-pool-for-hours-on-end ways, I still end up spending SO much time in direct sun. So I make sure to apply BeautyRx’s Solar Defense Sheer Sunscreen with SPF 50 an hour before I head out of the house and reapply as much as I can. I also rock a hat whenever I can, although sometimes I have to take it off for sake of overheating on my runs!

Any tips or tricks on how to get a glow without getting burned?

There are two things I do religiously — exfoliate and apply self-tanner. Even without a tan, the sure-fire way to get that glowy, dewy skin is to exfoliate! While I use an exfoliating towel and scrubs for my body, I go the “chemical” route with my face with BeautyRx’s Essential 8% Exfoliating Serum and Advanced 10% Exfoliating Pads. Additionally, I’d be dishonest if I said I didn’t still enjoy my time in the sun. However, instead of rushing to my first chance to go layout, I enjoy 10-15 minute spurts of protected sun exposure! And likely much more than that if I include being active outside!

What’s your favorite product for dealing with any dryness from the summer heat?

Again, I continuously exfoliate to make sure I’m getting rid of dead skin cells and making sure any moisturizing products (I love my Soothing Moisture Cream!) are getting to my healthy skin cells who are ready to soak them up!! I am also religious about hydrating my body, which has a direct effect on your skin. I like adding electrolytes during summer, to make sure my body is absorbing water properly. My favorite hydration product is Nuun Hydration.

What products are always in your bag during the summer?

SPF, face wipes, moisturizing spray, moisturizer, water, and lip balm.
