A common question we get is, "Do pores open and close?" Another similar one is, "Is an enlarged pore an open pore?" In this episode of DermTV, Dr. Schultz responds to these important questions because understanding the answers helps us treat enlarged pores. Pores don't actually open and close by themselves, but the pore's size can change, which is usually why patients sometimes come to the conclusion that they open and close. Pore size can get bigger if there is a clog, and they can get smaller if the pore is cleaned out. If you'd like to decrease the size of your pores, you can use exfoliants that can dissolve the clogs. Using gentle moist heat, in the shower or from steaming, can temporarily increase the pore size so you can use a granular cleanser to get the granules into the clogged pores to help clean them out. Overall, enlarged pores are common and, for the most part, can be treated easily.
