Many people are confused about what order in their skincare regiment they should be applying sunscreen. Dr. Schultz will tell you when to apply it in order for it to be most effective.
Read TranscriptWe've had more questions to date concerning, in what order to apply sunscreen with other products than any other subject and as a matter of facts it's generated some stimulating discussions in the comment section on DermTV. As a general rule, sunscreen always goes on first and the reason for this is, for the sunscreen to work it has to bind with the skin in a chemical reaction to make it able to absorb or block the sun rays. That's the fast answer. The questions have largely concerned sunscreens, when used with antioxidants, exfoliants, moisturizers, make-up and acne medications and let me take them one at a time. When we're dealing with antioxidants- trick question! Because antioxidants are always used at bedtime and you don't use sunscreen at bedtime. Exfoliants? Sunscreen first, exfoliants second. Moisturizer? Sunscreen first, moisturizer second. Make up? Sunscreen first, make-up second, even if the make-up has an SPF in it. The one exception may be acne products which are put just as spot treatments on individual blemishes. Acne treatments tend to be a very thing liquid so they don't show. As a very thin liquid as a spot treatment, the liquid evaporates and it's okay to put that thin, spot treatment on first and then the sunscreen on the rest of your face. But to be perfectly clear, almost universally, sunscreen is applied first.
