At-Home Skincare Quick Fixes That Work

So what do you do when the phone rings, and all of a sudden you have three days’ notice for a really important meeting, interview, date or party, and you just need your face to look its very best. Whether the issue is a facial rash, acne, dull skin, facial discoloration or lines and wrinkles, I’m going to give you, today, some at-home quick fixes on what you can do and, in another episode, I’ll give you in-office quick fixes.

Let’s start with just a facial rash. The best way to treat this is with milk and water compresses 3-4 times a day followed by an over-the-counter 1% hydrocortisone cream. If you need help with the compresses, see DermTV episode 15, “At-Home Remedies for Irritated Skin.” For dull skin or for acne breakouts, use an exfoliant with either 2% salicylic or 8% glycolic every day to get rid of the dead cells that are causing both the dull skin and also the dead cells in the pores that are actually contributing to the acne breakouts. For the actual pimples, you can get an over-the-counter 5% benzoyl peroxide or a Resorcinol sulfa preparation like Rezamid to put actually a very small amount on the pimples twice a day. The day of the event, if you still have some red discoloration from your rash or from your pimples, get an oil and water skin-type appropriate foundation to help cover those up. If you’re having trouble covering the redness, get one with a green tint, and that green will hide the red immediately. Two to three hours before the event, try a wrinkle plumper which will help take away fine lines and wrinkles, and if you don’t want to use that, you can just try rubbing the area with the wrinkles for about 20-30 seconds firmly with Vaseline or just a moisturizer. It will cause a little bit of swelling which will take away those lines and wrinkles for a couple of hours. On the way into the event, if you have a little extra oil, take out some blotting paper and remove the oil with blotting paper. And for the guys, on the day of your event, shave just with the grain, don’t shave against the grain. You won’t get as close of a shave but you can be sure that you won’t get any irritation.
