Today we are going to discuss what has to be one of the most confusing subjects in all of skin care and that has to do with if you are using multiple skin care products at the same time, in what order do you apply your products? You have heard me say time and time again always apply your sunscreen first, but there are actually exceptions to that rule, and it is all based on the fact that the order of application of your product depends on the vehicle the product is in.
All of your skin care products consist of an active ingredient like the molecule of the sunscreen which is than dissolved in a lotion or a cream or an ointment which is the vehicle.
The rule to take away from today is skin care products that are lighter in weight like lotions and watery products are applied first. The heavy ones like creams are applied second and the heavier ones like ointments are applied last. Let me show you what I mean.
The clear liquid in the vial is a light skin care product, the red liquid in the vial is a heavy skin care product and the third vial contains the clear liquid sitting on top of the red liquid. If you but the red liquid product on first then put the clear liquid product on, the clear liquid can not penetrate through the red liquid to get the active ingredients to your skin. On the other hand, if you put the clear liquid product on first and then put the red liquid product on, the red liquid product can then penetrate through the clear liquid product to your skin. As demonstrated here by pouring the heavier liquid into the lighter liquid, the heavier liquid flows right through the lighter one and this can then be absorbed into your skin.
So the bottom line is here, if you are using multiple skin care products at the same time, apply the lightest one first, the heavier next and the heaviest one last so that your skin can get the benefit of all of the products and all of the active ingredients.
