Why Is Skin Type Important

Article by Dr. Neal Schultz - Did you know that even if you have the right type of product to treat your skin condition, if it's not appropriate for your skin type, it can actually make your condition worse? That's why knowing your skin type and making sure every skincare product you purchase is appropriate for your skin type is so, so important. Each BeautyRx product is labeled with the skin types its appropriate for so you can ensure that you find the right products for your skin.

I've also created a simple and easy-to-use tool to find your skin type. However, I also want you to understand how skin type is determined so you can understand why it's so important.

Your skin type is determined by your oil and water balance. Does your skin have too little water? Too much? Just enough? And what about oil? (Note: Many people erroneously relate oil and water, while in fact, they have nothing to do with one another. The amount of oil you have has nothing to do with the amount of water you have.)

Oily & Acne: You have oily and/or acne-prone skin when your skin produces too much oil. As a result, your skin can appear shiny and you may be prone to acne breakouts. You will find that you're most oily in your T-Zone (which is your forehead, nose and chin, hence, forming a "T"). The best way to treat oily skin is by controlling excess oil with the correct, oil-free skin care products. Oil-containing products will usually cause you to breakout.

Dry: Your skin has too little water (which has nothing to do with your skin's oil). This can cause your skin to feel tight, appear flakey, and even develop fine lines. It can also feel itchy. Dryness usually occurs on the cheeks but can be anywhere. Generally, the most effective way to treat dry skin is to rehydrate it with water-based moisturizing skincare products.

Combination: You have dry cheeks and an oily T-Zone. This is a very common condition. While you may find treatment for this skin type to be confusing (because using products for your oily T-zone will not be appropriate for your dry cheeks), the good news is that certain products are labeled specifically for combination skin, and you can also use products labeled for oily and acne skin on your oily areas and products labeled for dry skin on your dry areas.

Normal: Your skin has the right amount of oil and water for you so your skin is neither oily nor acne-prone nor dry.

It's really that simple. So the moral of this skincare story is: Whenever purchasing skincare products, make sure they're appropriate for your skin type.
