Skin Care Treatments

The other day I touched on the causes of adult acne, and ‘fessed up to getting an occasional blemish or two. Well apparently, this week is one of those occasions. I have two pimples to the left of my lips and another in the middle of my chin. Ugh.

Let’s talk treatment.

Dr. Schultz explains acne treatment in three short steps on DermTV.

In short, to combat acne, you should use three types of products twice a day: a cleanser, a toner and a product with an active ingredient.

1. Start with a cleanser in the morning. Using one that caters specifically to your skin type, put a small amount in your palm and massage it into your face for 5-10 seconds before rinsing and patting your skin dry.

When asking a friend the other day about some of her skincare concerns, she immediately said adult acne.

Adult acne can stretch into your 20’s and even through your 40‘s, and a lot of women are dealing with it these days. I myself get a blemish or two every now and then, so I got to wondering, what are the causes? Dr. Schultz has identified three major causes of adult acne:

I know, I know. On Monday I said that a facial was one of the things I couldn’t get at home, from my bathroom cabinet. It’s true, I can’t set up a spa in my apartment, but with a cabinet full of essential skincare products, I might just be able to create a do-it-myself facial.

Why not give the following steps a try next time you have 20 minutes to spare?

Step 1: Cleanse

Use a cleanser to set the foundation for your facial. One that’s suited for your skin type (oily, combination or normal) will help wash away the debris and dead cells that’ve accumulated on the surface of your skin.

Step 2: Skin Analysis

With all of this talk about best skincare practices and how to take care of your fabulous face at home, I can’t help but think of the one thing I can’t get from the bathroom cabinet: a facial.

Aside from massage, facials are perhaps the second most popular spa treatment on the menu. There are standard facials, with or without extractions, those that use organic products or luxurious ingredients, like 24 carat gold and precious metals, and there are treatments that now involve the use chemical products and peels. So, the inevitable question is, do they work? And are they safe?

We’ve covered skincare in your teens, and in your twenties, so why not touch on skincare tips for those of us in our thirties?

Regardless of your age, you should be using the skincare essentials: exfoliating products, antioxidants, and sunscreen. However, as we age our main skincare concerns change. The issue that was most important in your teens and twenties, the treatment and prevention of acne, has evolved into the ongoing prevention of premature photo-aging and treatment of emerging lines and wrinkles.

We all want things instantly, and why shouldn’t we? Surely you are familiar with the phrase, “patience is a virtue,” and you can bet that this golden rule pertains to skincare.

So, how long exactly do we have to wait?

We’ve talked skincare for 20-year-olds, so let’s skip back a decade to the teen years (ah, the memories).

These years are tough... and that goes for your skin as well. Without getting too technical, your hormones are changing, which means excess oil production for your skin. Not only does your skin look shiny, this oh-so-lovely over abundance of oil causes acne breakouts.

So, if you're a teen looking to shape up your skincare regimen, give this routine a try:

There's no doubt about it; ingrown hairs are completely and utterly undesired. They’re annoying, uncomfortable, and hmm, just plain unsightly.

So how do we treat, and better yet prevent, these “ingrowns” from taking root?

Treatment

Ingrowns can be random, occurring once a year or once in a lifetime (lucky you), but they are most often a result of some method of hair removal, such as shaving, plucking, threading or waxing. The fastest and most efficient way to treat these little buggers involves using a sterile needle to pop open the ingrown and force it out like you would a blackhead.

Another one of my travel skincare woes just happened to be a few lovely pimples that sprung up on my chin the day after I got home.

While they have healed, I still have two brown spots left to remember them by... and, for some reason, these spots always seem to last infinitely longer than the pimples themselves.

So, what to do? Number one - don’t pick them - however irresistible the urge. And don't pick your pimples. Picking is the habit that causes the dark spots. Let's get rid of these spots the expert way.

Most men start shaving sometime in their early teens. Seems like nothing to be jealous of, but did you know that every morning, they were actually exfoliating as well?

Exfoliation, by definition, is the removal of dead cells from the surface of our skin. Although there are a few ways to exfoliate, shaving is one of those common, everyday practices that does just that (in addition to removing facial hair). Have you ever noticed that, as men age, they have better looking skin than women? I know, I know, it might be hard to admit.
