I'm on a recap trend. Having just summarized the myriad skincare topics we covered in November (from pore minimizing to sensitive skin), I thought it might be a good idea to review the three skincare essentials.

We’ve covered skincare in your teens, and in your twenties, so why not touch on skincare tips for those of us in our thirties?

Regardless of your age, you should be using the skincare essentials: exfoliating products, antioxidants, and sunscreen. However, as we age our main skincare concerns change. The issue that was most important in your teens and twenties, the treatment and prevention of acne, has evolved into the ongoing prevention of premature photo-aging and treatment of emerging lines and wrinkles.

We are all short on time these days. No one wants to hear that their flight is delayed 2 hours, it’ll be an extra 10 minutes for that hamburger the kitchen forgot to make, and 5 minutes seems like an eon of time to spend on your skin.

But say you have an upcoming event (I can name a few on my calendar) in a few weeks, and you want to make sure you’re looking your best. Why not start with your skin? And start now?

First, define.

Define your skin - is it dry, oily, combination, or normal? Choosing products that are right for your skin type is the first step in creating a regimen that is perfectly suited for your pores.

Adopt a daily routine.

This past weekend I didn’t get one spot of sunburn. Woo hoo! But what if I did?

Over the Labor Day weekend I headed to the countryside of West Virginia to visit my sister. One morning, we went kayaking down the Muskingum River, which took about three hours. Although we made one pit stop (to jump off of a rope swing) the majority of our time was spent smack dab in the middle of the river, with no shade to protect us from the sun.

Yesterday was a lazy Sunday, and a stormy one here in New York. Taking full advantage of the conditions, I waited out the passing thunder and rain on my couch for the better part of the morning (and the afternoon...). When the sky seemed to clear, I snuck out on errands. What did I forget?

My sunscreen.

According to Dr. Schultz, there are three essential skincare products that we should use every day: a sunscreen, an exfoliant, and an antioxidant.

Fortunately, these products are widely available and convenient to use. So why not get started?

Prevention with sunscreen

Around the BeautyRx office, we have a saying that treating your face is like cleaning a blouse.

It might sound a bit strange, but let me explain.

When you look in the mirror, what do you see? We hope you see a beautiful face, but you might be more apt to point out what you don’t like about your skin than what you do. So let’s be honest; after a long, hard look, you might say you see lines or even some wrinkles.

Now, back to that blouse! Imagine a blouse with a stain on it and a few pills. Now imagine that same blouse with a few creases. If you iron the blouse, what are you left with? A stained and pilled blouse.
