Did you miss the latest BeautyRx Live last Wednesday?

Well not to worry, you can check it out on the BeautyRx website... and I’ll do you one better - give you a quick three minute preview that’ll give you the gist. (But, please feel free to go back and tune into the show, maybe when you take that afternoon break.)

What is BeautyRx Live exactly? Well, on the third Wednesdays of each month, Dr. Schultz - the brain behind the BeautyRx brand - answers questions from people like you and me in real time (hence the word “Live”).

So what came up last Wednesday?

If I had a penny for every time my lips were chapped, well, let’s just say I wouldn’t be buying lottery tickets.

The issue of chapped lips is, simply put, an over drying of the skin on your lip. Cold air, low humidity, sunlight and even strong winds can cause this excessive dryness.

The reason why your lips can dry out so quickly - faster than other areas of your skin - is due to the fact that the skin on your lips is actually a mucus membrane. Without getting too technical, this means that the skin on your lips is much thinner and more delicate, so it’s more vulnerable.

Winter’s a coming... so that means we should break out coats, gloves, scarves, and... moisturizers?

If you have dry, flaky skin then sure - give it a go - but most of us might not know that a moisturizer isn’t a quick fix for every "dry" skin issue and, sometimes, these products can make things worse. Putting moisturizer on the soles of your feet is a prime example, as is adding a dab or two to your scalp, above or between your eyebrows and next to your nose.

We are all short on time these days. No one wants to hear that their flight is delayed 2 hours, it’ll be an extra 10 minutes for that hamburger the kitchen forgot to make, and 5 minutes seems like an eon of time to spend on your skin.

But say you have an upcoming event (I can name a few on my calendar) in a few weeks, and you want to make sure you’re looking your best. Why not start with your skin? And start now?

First, define.

Define your skin - is it dry, oily, combination, or normal? Choosing products that are right for your skin type is the first step in creating a regimen that is perfectly suited for your pores.

Adopt a daily routine.

I have moisture on the brain, due to the fact that I just sat through a major hurricane (thanks, Irene). So I decided to dig a little deeper into moisturizers, something which I presumed I should be using every day. Or should I?

The purpose of facial moisturizers isn’t a secret; it corrects, treats, and prevents dry skin. Skin that doesn’t have enough water looks flaky and it can even feel a bit “tight” to the touch (cheeks are prime real estate). Moisturizers contain ingredients like aloe vera, ceramides, dimethicone, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, shea butter, and silicone, all of which help rehydrate your skin, improve your complexion, and even smooth out fine lines and textured skin. It’s kind of like dermatology’s Gatorade.
