Hold the anchovies... and the acne?

So I decided to check out DermTV to see what Dr. Schultz had to say about acne breakouts and food. Here's the scoop:

Foods Don't Usually Cause Breakouts

First, let me list those forbidden foods that are commonly linked to acne breakouts: chocolate, fried foods, nuts, caffeine, sodas and, yes, pizza. Guess what? By and large, they don't cause breakouts. Dr. Schultz says that if you haven't seen a relationship between eating these foods one day and getting pimples the next, then there isn't a serious need to avoid them if you have acne (although you might want to consider striking a few off of the list to help out your belly). Many studies have shown these foods to cause acne in less than 5% of the population of acne sufferers.

Iodine Can Cause Acne

However, the doc does mention that consistent consumption of iodine can cause acne, as it is the only substance that has been proven on a cumulative basis to cause acne breakouts. Foods with high iodine content include shellfish, lobster, shrimp, crabmeat and green leafy veggies like spinach and seaweeds. So, if you think eating these foods might be contributing to your breakouts, take a closer look at your skin after indulging in these iodine heavy foods.

So, with food (for the most part) off the hook in terms of causing acne breakouts, I thought I might share just a few other acne preventing tips:

Use oil-free skincare products
Don't sleep with your makeup on repeatedly (aka every night)
Don't let anything consistently touch or rub your face (including your fingers and hair)
After washing your face, pat it dry (don't rub)
Wash your face before you exercise

So, what's for dinner tonight? Pizza anyone?
