Cleanse

The other day I touched on the causes of adult acne, and ‘fessed up to getting an occasional blemish or two. Well apparently, this week is one of those occasions. I have two pimples to the left of my lips and another in the middle of my chin. Ugh.

Let’s talk treatment.

Dr. Schultz explains acne treatment in three short steps on DermTV.

In short, to combat acne, you should use three types of products twice a day: a cleanser, a toner and a product with an active ingredient.

1. Start with a cleanser in the morning. Using one that caters specifically to your skin type, put a small amount in your palm and massage it into your face for 5-10 seconds before rinsing and patting your skin dry.

Tuesday was a reality check. It was back to New York and back to work, after spending a little more than a week off, some great time with family and - of course - eating some delicious food.

As much as I didn't want to get out of bed yesterday morning, the one thing I wasn't bothered to get back to was my skincare routine.

I know, I know. On Monday I said that a facial was one of the things I couldn’t get at home, from my bathroom cabinet. It’s true, I can’t set up a spa in my apartment, but with a cabinet full of essential skincare products, I might just be able to create a do-it-myself facial.

Why not give the following steps a try next time you have 20 minutes to spare?

Step 1: Cleanse

Use a cleanser to set the foundation for your facial. One that’s suited for your skin type (oily, combination or normal) will help wash away the debris and dead cells that’ve accumulated on the surface of your skin.

Step 2: Skin Analysis

We’ve talked before about combination skincare products - and it seems to me that those that give you two for the price of one are pretty desirable. It's like two peas in a pod.

Who wouldn’t want to save time these days? So, would a cleanser with an exfoliant be a super duo, just like a moisturizer with an SPF?

We’ve talked skincare for 20-year-olds, so let’s skip back a decade to the teen years (ah, the memories).

These years are tough... and that goes for your skin as well. Without getting too technical, your hormones are changing, which means excess oil production for your skin. Not only does your skin look shiny, this oh-so-lovely over abundance of oil causes acne breakouts.

So, if you're a teen looking to shape up your skincare regimen, give this routine a try:

Morning

We are all short on time these days. No one wants to hear that their flight is delayed 2 hours, it’ll be an extra 10 minutes for that hamburger the kitchen forgot to make, and 5 minutes seems like an eon of time to spend on your skin.

But say you have an upcoming event (I can name a few on my calendar) in a few weeks, and you want to make sure you’re looking your best. Why not start with your skin? And start now?

First, define.

Define your skin - is it dry, oily, combination, or normal? Choosing products that are right for your skin type is the first step in creating a regimen that is perfectly suited for your pores.

Adopt a daily routine.

We've talked exfoliation. We've talked protection. Now it's time to cleanse.

Remember the three products that are essential to a solid skincare regimen? Exfoliants, Antioxidants, and Sunscreen. Well, make sure you find a gentle facial cleanser to back these up. In order for any other skincare product to work at its full potential, you first need to remove any residual build-up on your skin’s surface, whether it be dirt, debris, excess oil, make-up, or dead cells, and that's exactly what a good cleanser does.
