May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. Melanoma takes one life every hour even though it is the most easily identifiable form of cancer since it’s in plain sight. While there are many free screenings being offered around the country in May, use the following rules to do a self-exam of your moles anytime.

ABCDE Rule

A: Asymmetry – The two halves of your mole should match; if they don’t, the mole may be precancerous.

B: Border – A precancerous mole often has uneven borders, with scalloped or notched sides.

C: Color – Precancerous moles may have a variety of colors, such as shades of brown, tan and/or black. A melanoma can be red, blue or other colors.

D: Diameter – A mole that is larger than the size of a pencil eraser is more likely to be precancerous or may be an early melanoma.

You often hear the rule “reapply sunscreen every 2-3 hours.” If there is no sunscreen left on your face after two to three hours, do you need to wash it off at night as you get ready for bed?

Wash It Off

Even though your sunscreen is no longer effective, you should be sure to wash your face before going to sleep. While the actives in your sunscreen may be not-so-active anymore, there is probably sunscreen still left on your face. So at the end of the night, you do still need to wash your face.

You may see "Witch Hazel" listed among the ingredients of your skincare products. Here's why it's an important name to know.

What Is It

Witch Hazel comes from the witch hazel, or Hamamelis virginiana, shrub, which grows in North America. Witch Hazel is produced from the leaves and bark of this shrub, and is recognized as an ingredient with many medicinal uses. It has many constituents, such as tannin, flavonoids and saponins, which combine to give witch hazel antioxidant, astringent and anti-inflammatory properties.

Cleansing is the foundation of any skincare routine since it removes the dirt, debris and excess oil on your skin. Have you ever wonder what enables a cleanser to do this?

Why Cleanse?

Cleansing is an integral part of any skincare routine no matter your skin type. Throughout the day, many things can settle on your skin, such as dirt and pollution, in addition to previously applied skincare products, makeup and even excess oil. Cleansing removes all of this debris to clean your skin. Additionally, cleansing allows your treatment products to work better by giving them a clean slate to penetrate and allowing for predictable results.

Between the dry, cold air outside and the stifling dry heat inside, your skin doesn’t stand a chance against dry, itchy skin this winter unless you take special steps to care for it.

Treat the Itch

If you’re struggling with itchy skin, your first priority is probably to stop the constant and uncomfortable sensation. First, take a non-drowsy antihistamine, such as Allegra to combat the itch. While this might not work for everyone, it doesn’t hurt to try. At night, use a cold-water humidifier to help restore the moisture in your body that has been dried out by the cold air and dry heat. And if you don’t have a humidifier, don’t fret: putting a pot on top of your freestanding radiator has the same effect.

The skincare world is full of abbreviations: SPF, AHA, BHA. Today we are going to discuss two that may be easily confused but serve two very different purposes: AHA and HA.

AHA: Alpha Hydroxy Acid

Let’s start with AHA: AHA stands for Alpha Hydroxy Acid. Sound familiar? That’s because glycolic acid, Dr. Schultz’s star ingredient and the gold standard of exfoliation, is an AHA. AHAs help to exfoliate the skin, removing the dead top layer of skin cells. It’s important to incorporate an exfoliant into your regimen for all of the amazing results it gives.

HA: Hylauronic Acid
